Description
The title 算盛増入 is a compressed phrase combining characters for calculation (算), abundance or heaping (盛), increase (増), and entry or income (入), suggesting themes of accumulation, commercial arithmetic, or financial procedure — possibly a punning or vernacular title for a satirical scene involving merchants, gamblers, tax collectors, or religious fundraisers engaged in counting. Kyosai's output includes numerous satirical genre scenes where numerical or commercial activity becomes a vehicle for social commentary, and such punning titles were characteristic of his wit. The precise subject must be read from the image, but within the context of his oeuvre — particularly the Hyakkyō satirical series and related single-sheet designs — such a title likely frames figures in characteristic comic postures: bodies bent over an abacus, sake cups accumulating alongside tallies, or ritual practice reduced to the ledger. Kyosai's command of compressed figure groupings and confident ink line would make the social type immediately legible to Meiji-era audiences.
