Description
This unidentified Kawanabe Kyosai woodblock print has not been matched to a confirmed title or series in available catalogues. Kyosai's commercial print output spanned serious narrative subjects drawn from Buddhist iconography, Japanese and Chinese history, and kabuki, alongside comic and grotesque imagery that earned him both admirers and censors. His prints frequently exhibit bold compositional decisions — strong diagonal arrangements, unexpected spatial compression, or figures cut dramatically at the frame edge — reflecting his restless pictorial intelligence. The print is produced using the polychrome nishiki-e technique on washi, with carvers and printers working from Kyosai's brush designs to achieve the range of color and texture visible in surviving impressions.
