Description
This Kawanabe Kyosai woodblock print is catalogued without a confirmed title. Kyosai's engagement with the print medium was characteristically prolific and eclectic, encompassing illustrated books (ehon), single-sheet prints (ichimai-e), and contributions to collaborative series. His technical command of the printed line — achieved through close collaboration with skilled block-carvers who could faithfully reproduce the speed and pressure variation of his brushwork — sets his prints apart from those of more conventionally trained ukiyo-e artists. The polychrome nishiki-e process used here required multiple carved blocks, one per color, and careful registration to achieve the precise overlay of tones and outlines visible in finished impressions on washi paper.
