Description
A variant impression or possibly a separately published edition of the Tokyo Kaika Meisho print depicting Nihonbashi at dawn with the ninth-generation Ichikawa Danjuro, this sheet shares its complete title inscription with the related impression. In Meiji-era print publishing, multiple editions of popular subjects were common, sometimes varying in colorist's interpretation of the same keyblock, sometimes representing reprints issued by the same or different publishers. The Nihonbashi setting at dawn — one of the most symbolically laden locations in Japanese urban culture, the ceremonial starting point of the Tokaido road — combined with the image of Danjuro IX would have held strong appeal for a Tokyo audience navigating the transition between Edo cultural memory and Meiji modernity. Danjuro IX's public persona as a guardian of Kabuki tradition made him an appropriate figure to anchor a series celebrating the city's historic character.
