Description
A crow stands alone in snow, its black form dramatic against the white ground in a composition of extreme visual economy. Kyosai's snow scenes achieve effects through contrast and restraint that his more elaborately colored prints sometimes cannot: the crow's darkness against the paper-white snow creates a tension that is simultaneously beautiful and slightly austere. The title "Settchu karasu" simply states the facts — crow in snow — and asks the image to do all the rest.
