Description
A crow perches on a branch in one of Kyosai's characteristic studies of the bird he painted more than any other subject. These crow-on-branch compositions vary enormously in mood depending on subtle choices of branch species, time of day suggested by background treatment, and the specific posture of the bird: alert or drowsy, aggressive or at ease. Each study is a fresh observation, never a mechanical repetition, demonstrating Kyosai's lifelong insistence on seeing his subjects anew.
