A single crow perches with casual authority on a bent pine branch, rendered in Kyosai's masterful ink-painting style. The crow was one of Kyosai's most beloved and personal subjects — he returned to it throughout his career, seeing in the bird's sharp intelligence and glossy blackness an emblem of his own irreverent spirit. Here the hanging scroll format gives the composition an austere, meditative quality: the economy of ink against empty silk makes the bird's presence all the more commanding, its eye alert and knowing.
