Description
This woodblock print belongs to Kyosai's series depicting episodes from the Chushingura narrative, the celebrated account of the forty-seven loyal retainers who avenged the death of their lord Asano Naganori. Kyosai rendered the drama with the bold, kinetic brushwork that distinguishes his figural work from more conventional ukiyo-e treatments of the same subject. The composition likely captures one of the raid's tense interior scenes or a moment of confrontation among armored retainers, employing strong diagonal movement and compressed spatial depth. Kyosai trained under both Kano school painters and Utagawa Kuniyoshi, and his Chushingura prints reflect that dual inheritance: rigorous figure drawing fused with the visceral energy of warrior-print tradition. Printed on oban-format washi with multiple color blocks, the work participates in a long lineage of Chushingura illustration while bearing Kyosai's unmistakable idiosyncratic line.
