From Kyosai hyakuzu, this print likely presents one of Kyosai's skeletal subjects — the gaikotsu imagery for which he became particularly celebrated. From at least the 1870s onward, Kyosai depicted animated skeletons engaged in everyday human activities: dancing, playing instruments, drinking. These images drew on both Buddhist memento mori traditions and the satirical potential of visualizing social behavior stripped of its flesh. A skeleton playing a shamisen or lifting a sake cup would be rendered with the same technical precision Kyosai applied to living figures, the bones articulated with anatomical confidence derived from actual study. The juxtaposition of carefully observed skeletal structure with incongruously mundane activity generated the disturbing comedy characteristic of Kyosai's best work.
