Description

This sheet from the Kyôsai hyakuzu belongs to one of the series' recurring categories: the historical or legendary figure rendered with the visual authority Kyosai derived from Kanō school figure painting. The Hyakuzu includes portraits of poets, warriors, monks, and mythological personages, each identified by visual attribute rather than inscribed title. Kyosai's rendering of historical figures draws on earlier pictorial traditions while inflecting them with his own characteristic energy — a slight exaggeration of gesture, a sharpness of physiognomy that stops short of caricature. The woodblock printing process would have required careful key block cutting to preserve the fine lines of facial features and textile patterns. Color blocks would supply the pigments of court dress or armor, with flat application preferred over complex shading in order to maintain legibility at the printed scale. The series treats such figures as part of a continuous cultural inheritance rather than as academic subjects.
