Description
A single black crow, rendered in dense, sumi-black ink with a fine white highlight in its eye, perches on a gnarled plum branch that zigzags across the right half of the composition; a few pale plum blossoms dot the branch below the bird. Behind the crow a pale, unshaded full moon is partly eclipsed by its body, set against a soft grey-brushed sky on warm beige paper. At left, columns of black calligraphic text and several red seal stamps occupy the otherwise empty ground; the palette is limited to black, grey, and touches of red against the neutral background. Kawanabe Kyosai, "Full Moon with Crow on Plum Branch," 1880, color woodblock print.
