A heron stands motionless in the rain, its long neck curved in the characteristic attitude of patient waiting that makes herons among the most painterly of birds. Kyosai's interest in birds extended well beyond his famous crows — he drew and painted herons, cranes, eagles, and sparrows with equal attentiveness — but the heron in rain occupies a special place in Japanese aesthetics, evoking the category of aware that arises when a solitary creature endures the weather with dignified stoicism. The rain is rendered as diagonal lines that cross the heron's pale stillness like the brushstrokes of a calligrapher.
