Two crows perch on a plum branch against the dramatic backdrop of a rising sun, the triple imagery of crow, plum, and solar disc combining to produce one of Kyosai's most symbolically charged compositions. The crow was considered a divine messenger in Shinto tradition — the three-legged Yatagarasu guided Emperor Jimmu on his legendary journey — giving the bird's association with the rising sun a patriotic and spiritual resonance. The composition pulses with optimistic energy, as if the new day, the new year, and perhaps the new Meiji era itself are being ushered in.
