A crow occupies the bare branches of a plum tree in a composition that emphasizes the tree's structure as much as the bird's presence — the intricate winter lacework of leafless branches creating a delicate scaffolding against which the crow's solid black form reads with particular clarity. The plum in winter, just before it blooms, was a subject rich in Japanese cultural association: the tree's bare branches suggested endurance and the waiting quality of late winter, while the approaching bloom promised transformation.
