Autumn foliage subjects by Hasui are popular but trade at a slight discount to his snow and rain scenes — the seasonal color is inherently pleasing but less technically demanding than atmospheric precipitation effects. Pre-war lifetime editions command the strongest premiums; combined subjects (autumn foliage with rain, twilight, or temple architecture) approach rain and night scene pricing. Postwar lifetime editions (1946–1957) bearing the small 6mm J-seal represent authentic lifetime impressions but from the artist's final decade.
A Farmhouse in Autumn, Ayashi in Miyagi Prefecture, published in 1946, depicts a rural farmhouse in the Ayashi village of present-day Sendai city — a thatched or tile-roofed traditional farmhouse set within its autumnal agricultural landscape of persimmon trees, rice paddy stubble, and zelkova turning gold. The 1946 publication date — the immediate postwar period — gives this warm autumnal rural subject a particular poignancy, the traditional farmhouse landscape representing a Japan largely untouched by the destruction of the war years. Hasui's village scenes of this period carry a documentary quality, preserving the vernacular agricultural landscape of Tohoku.
