Description
Part of Nagai's eleventh color lithograph series, Cl-11-2 exemplifies his gestural approach to printmaking, in which fluid ink passages and layered washes of color evoke organic forms drawn from the rural Japanese landscape. Nagai employs the lithographic stone's capacity for tonal gradation to produce soft transitions between hues, recalling the dyeing traditions of his native Hachioji. The alphanumeric title — characteristic of his serialized practice — situates the work within a numbered sequence rather than a fixed subject, inviting the viewer to trace formal relationships across the series. Brushwork visible in the printed surface suggests the influence of his father's plant-based dye preparations, translated here into lithographic ink on paper.
