Afternoon Cat — Gogo no Neko — a cat in the particular state of afternoon drowsiness that is one of the most characteristically feline qualities. The afternoon cat — half-awake, unhurried, warming itself in a patch of sun — was a subject that combined Kimura's interest in animal subjects with a particular quality of time: the slow, unhurried middle hours of the day when the domestic world quiets and cats (and sometimes people) succumb to the temptation of rest. The Japanese title grounds the universal subject in a specific time of day.
