Description
Rain — Ame — rendered in Kimura's contemporary woodblock style, the precipitation depicted through graphic means that suggest falling water without literally illustrating each droplet. Rain subjects in Japanese printmaking had a long history, from the diagonal rain-lines of ukiyo-e to the atmospheric gradation of shin-hanga rain compositions. Kimura's contemporary approach may use abstract pattern, diagonal movement, or tonal contrast to evoke the visual experience of rain — the world seen through a scrim of falling water.
