Description
A summer ocean — the sea in the full heat of summer, when the water takes on a particular deep, saturated blue and the light reflects with an intensity different from any other season. Kimura's summer ocean subject places him in the tradition of Japanese seascape painting that found in the summer sea a particular visual experience: the heat shimmer above the water, the vivid contrast of blue against the white of light, the sense of both openness and intensity. His contemporary woodblock rendering abstracts these qualities into flat, graphic color.
