Description
YUHI — the evening sun — rendered as a semi-abstract composition in Kimura's contemporary woodblock style. The setting sun was one of the great subjects of the Japanese landscape tradition, the specific quality of evening light — the reddening of the sky, the elongation of shadows, the dramatic color transformation of familiar forms — providing printmakers with a visual experience that tested the limits of the woodblock medium's color range. Kimura's abstract approach reduces the evening sun to its essential visual drama.
