Scene Adapted from the play The Treasury of Loyal Retainers (Chushingura), a Kitagawa Utamaro print of about 1797 in the Cleveland Museum of Art, belongs to the long Edo tradition of theatrical mitate. The Chushingura, the dramatized story of the forty-seven loyal retainers and their revenge for their lord, was performed in both kabuki and puppet theater, and ukiyo-e artists routinely re-staged its emotional set pieces. Utamaro's interpretation, like other examples in his oeuvre, foregrounds women, making the scene an Edo bijin-ga rather than a martial print. He invites the viewer to identify the act of the play from costume, props, and posture, while the surface beauty of the figures themselves takes center stage.
