Description
Suited to Crepes Stocked by Echigoya (Echigoya shi-ire no chijimi muki), from the series Summer Outfits: Beauties of Today (Natsu isho tosei bijin), is recorded by Harvard Art Museums as a print by Kitagawa Utamaro from about 1804. The series belongs to the late Edo tradition of seasonal fashion portraits, in which beauties were paired with specific textiles and merchants whose products were celebrated within the print itself. Echigoya, the famous Edo drygoods establishment that later evolved into Mitsukoshi, supplied the chijimi, a light crepe fabric prized for summer wear, and Utamaro's design effectively advertises both the cloth and its supplier through the elegance of his figure. As Edo bijin-ga, the print emphasizes the textile's draping and translucence, with the woman's pose chosen to display the fabric's cooling lightness against her skin. Robe pattern, fan and hair ornament situate her firmly in the contemporary fashion moment, while her gaze and posture project the composed sensuality that Utamaro had been refining for decades. As ukiyo-e, the work shows how floating-world prints functioned as part of Edo's commercial ecosystem, simultaneously decorative objects, fashion plates and discreet brand promotions for elite drygoods houses. Color choices favor restrained summery tones, with washes evoking the breathable feel of the chijimi cloth. The series as a whole testifies to the maturity of the late ukiyo-e market, in which named merchants and specific goods could anchor entire print sets. The Harvard sheet remains a representative example of Utamaro's ability to fuse aesthetic and commercial demands within his late bijin-ga.
