Description
Light Room 001 belongs to Kitano's Light Models series of 2015, in which photographic images are printed onto sheets that are subsequently folded to produce a low-relief surface. The title points to an interior space defined by a particular fall of light across walls, floor, or window — the kind of architectural-photographic motif that recurs throughout the series. The folding interrupts the photograph's planar continuity: each crease creates a discrete facet that catches ambient light differently from its neighbors, so the recorded illumination within the image meets the actual illumination of the exhibition space on the same paper surface. The result registers as both photograph and small sculpture, neither category fully containing it. This negotiation between mechanical capture and manual intervention sits at the center of Kitano's practice — the same logic that informs his teaching at Kyoto Seika University's Printmaking Course, where he treats photography, monotype, and digital composite as parts of one continuous medium. As the opening number in the present grouping, 001 establishes the formal terms — the rectangular sheet, the folded geometry, the photographed interior — that subsequent works rework.
