Description
Light Room 002 continues the Light Models investigation, presenting another folded photographic sheet drawn from Kitano's documentation of interior spaces. The image carries the vocabulary of the series — windows, walls, the geometry of a domestic or studio room registered as a play of tonal areas — but a folded photographic print, unlike a flat photograph, behaves differently under different lighting conditions. Where the photograph records light falling at one moment, the sculptural folds make the print receive light continuously: angle the work toward a window and one plane brightens while another falls into shadow, redrawing the composition as the viewer moves. Kitano's training combined an M.F.A. in printmaking at Kyoto Seika University with sustained engagement with photographic processes, and works in this series treat the printed surface as the meeting point between the two. The aesthetic lineage runs through postwar Japanese conceptual photography and the print experimentation of the sōsaku hanga generation, but the immediate concern is closer to phenomenology — what a photograph becomes when its support refuses to lie flat.
