Sagi Musume (Heron Maiden) is one of the most demanding solo dances in the kabuki repertoire, depicting a spirit inhabiting the form of a white heron who transforms through stages of longing, passion, and final suffering. Tsunetomi's print captures the dancer mid-performance in the characteristic white furisode with long trailing sleeves that evoke the spread wings of the bird. His handling of the robe would have required multiple printings of white and pale gray pigment over washi to suggest the layered texture of heron plumage, with bokashi gradation conveying the cold winter light associated with the piece. The Osaka theatrical world was central to Tsunetomi's practice, and his interpretation of this subject foregrounds the physical drama of the dancer's body rather than the idealized stillness more typical of Tokyo-school bijin-ga. The diagonal thrust of the sleeves activates the oban composition.
