Description

A variant impression or compositional variant of Tsunetomi's treatment of Umekawa from Meido no Hiyaku, this print returns to the same subject with potential differences in pose, costume detail, background treatment, or color palette. Tsunetomi produced multiple renderings of subjects he found particularly resonant, and the Umekawa figure—a courtesan caught between duty, love, and tragic circumstance—suited his aesthetic preoccupations precisely. The Shinmachi setting of the original play was a district Tsunetomi knew through his own work in Osaka, and his depictions of Umekawa carry the credibility of an artist painting a world he inhabited rather than imagined. In this version, the composition may emphasize a different aspect of Umekawa's character—her professional composure, her private emotion, or the theatrical moment of her stage representation—while maintaining the technical qualities of careful nishiki-e printing: precise registration, graded bokashi, and the kind of complex pattern reproduction that distinguished accomplished Osaka print workshops.
