Description
Picture Book of Edo Cherry Blossom (Ehon Edo zakura), vol. 1, a printed book of 1803 held by the Victoria and Albert Museum, is one of Kitao Masayoshi's celebrations of the springtime culture of his home city. Cherry-blossom viewing (hanami) was, and remains, the iconic seasonal festival of Japan, and Edo had numerous celebrated viewing sites where townspeople gathered in vast crowds beneath the flowering trees. The book combines images of these blossom sites with figures of the people enjoying them - picnicking families, dancing courtesans, traveling poets, sake-drinking samurai - rendering both the natural beauty and the social pageantry of the season. Masayoshi's treatment is characteristically warm and observational, capturing the festive density of Edo hanami while still individuating the people he depicts. The 1803 publication places the volume in the middle of his Tsuyama period, when he was continuing to produce commercial illustrated books alongside his samurai patronage commissions. The Victoria and Albert Museum's holding preserves the first volume of this seasonal celebration, providing important visual documentation of Edo hanami culture and adding a major late-period title to the museum's substantial collection of Masayoshi's printed books.
