Description
Two Entertainers and a Maid, circa 1777, is an [oban](/glossary/oban) color woodblock print at the Art Institute of Chicago. The composition shows two adult women - likely geisha or courtesans of the entertainment quarter - with a young female attendant (kamuro or shinzo, depending on context). The triple figure arrangement was a favorite Shigemasa composition: it allowed him to develop pictorial rhythm through three differently posed women and to set up subtle hierarchies of age, status, and gesture within a single sheet. The maid serves as a visual foil to the larger, taller figures of the entertainers, and her presence underscores the social structure of the demimonde. The oban format and full polychrome [nishiki-e](/glossary/nishiki-e) printing belong to the most prestigious tier of late-1770s [ukiyo-e](/glossary/ukiyo-e) production. This print, contemporary with the Seiro Bijin album, demonstrates the figural conventions that Shigemasa was establishing for the next generation of [bijin-ga](/glossary/bijin-ga) designers. The Art Institute of Chicago's impression preserves the layered color palette of mature Edo polychrome printing.
