Description

「両国焼跡」 — Ruins of Ryōgoku — records the aftermath of a fire at Ryōgoku, dated January 16, Meiji 14 (1881). Where the related print kobayashi-kiyochika--2 depicts the fire itself in its dramatic nocturnal violence, this composition shows the scene after the flames: the charred timbers, collapsed structures, and smoke-hazed sky characteristic of Tokyo's periodic fire devastation. Kiyochika's interest in diffuse and indirect light is well served by such post-fire scenes, where pale winter daylight filters through residual smoke and reflects off ash-covered ground. The human figures present, if any, would convey the scale of destruction by contrast. The Ryōgoku district, long associated with the Sumida River and the spectacle of the Edo cityscape, here becomes a record of urban loss — a counterpoint to the meisho-e tradition's celebration of the same sites.
