Description

Number thirty-two in the Kyōdō Risshi no Motoi series, this print depicts Oda Nobunaga (織田信長, 1534–1582), the powerful warlord who began the unification of Japan in the Sengoku period before his assassination at Honnōji. Nobunaga was known for his tactical innovations, embrace of firearms, and decisive character. In didactic print series of the Meiji period he typically appeared in armor or in scenes of military command. Kiyochika's composition would characteristically use dramatic contrast between illuminated figure and darker background, framing Nobunaga's authority in terms accessible to a youth audience. His inclusion in the series alongside Heian scholars and Kamakura regents reflects the breadth of moral models the series drew upon across Japanese history.
