Description

This print depicts the celebrated summer fireworks displays held over the Sumida River at Ryōgoku, one of Edo and early Meiji Tokyo's most beloved seasonal spectacles. Kiyochika's characteristic kōsen-ga approach transforms the pyrotechnic bursts into exercises in luminosity — trails of light and explosive blooms rendered against a darkened sky, with their reflections shimmering across the river surface below. Crowds gathered on the riverbanks and on pleasure boats (yanebune) would have populated the lower register, their forms silhouetted or faintly lit by the overhead spectacle. The composition exploits the dramatic contrast between the warm white and gold of the fireworks and the deep indigo of the night sky, achieved through graduated bokashi printing. This is one of two recorded states of this composition, suggesting sustained commercial demand for the subject. The print belongs to Kiyochika's landmark series documenting the landscapes and popular customs of a rapidly changing Tokyo.
