Description

This print depicts Kaiun Bridge under snowfall, a subject well suited to Kiyochika's signature kosen-ga approach. Snow scenes allowed him to exploit the contrast between diffused winter light and dark water or shadowed structures below. The bridge, rendered with architectural specificity, likely emerges from a grey-white sky rendered through graduated bokashi, while reflections on the canal beneath suggest the Western chiaroscuro techniques Kiyochika absorbed from foreign instructors in Meiji Tokyo. Snow accumulates on railings and embankments in precise, restrained strokes. The composition probably employs a low horizon line to maximize the cold luminosity of the sky, a device Kiyochika used consistently in his atmospheric urban winter series from the 1870s and 1880s.
