Description

Titled (イルミネーション), or 'Illumination,' this print addresses one of the defining novelties of Meiji Tokyo's public life: the large-scale electric or gas illuminations staged for celebrations, expositions, and national occasions. Kiyochika's kosen-ga practice, built around the representation of artificial light in the urban environment, was ideally suited to this subject. The composition likely depicts a public space—perhaps the grounds of a government building, a bridge, or a commercial district—transformed by strings or clusters of electric lights against a night sky. The technical challenge of rendering multiple artificial light sources required precise layering of color blocks and bokashi gradations, with warm yellow and white tones contrasting against deep indigo or black grounds across the washi sheet.
