Description

Moonlit Sea at Kawasaki presents the coastal waters near Kawasaki, just south of Tokyo, under the light of a moon either overhead or reflected on the water surface. Kiyochika made several prints of tidal flats and bays during the late 1870s, drawn to the mirror-like expanses of water that allowed his most ambitious experiments with reflected light. The composition likely opens onto a broad horizontal expanse of sea, the moon positioned high or just off-center, its reflection broken by the motion of waves into irregular columns of pale pigment on dark water. Any boats, piers, or shoreline elements appear as silhouettes. The print belongs to his exploration of liminal coastal spaces where city and sea meet in Meiji Japan's industrializing geography, while maintaining the compositional economy that defines his strongest nocturnes.
