Description
Suruga-cho, a prosperous commercial street in the Nihonbashi district of Tokyo, appears here under snow. The street was famous for its dry-goods merchants and was considered one of the most distinctly Edo urban scenes. Kiyochika depicts the modernizing cityscape — likely showing a mix of traditional wooden storefronts and newer Meiji-era facades — blanketed in snow that unifies the composition under muted light. Gas lamps or lanterns may provide a point-source warm glow contrasting with the cold ambient light, a compositional device central to his kosen-ga practice. Snow accumulating on eaves and signboards is rendered with flat white reserve, while foot traffic or empty streets below reinforce the stillness characteristic of his winter urban views.
