Description

Ishihara Bridge on the Ōkawa Riverbank is one of several prints in which Kiyochika focused on the minor bridges and embankments of the Sumida River system in Meiji Tokyo. Unlike Hiroshige's Edo views, which celebrated the river in bright, saturated nishiki-e palette, Kiyochika rendered the same landscape under subdued or artificial light, often at dusk, night, or in overcast weather. The Ishihara Bridge subject likely presents a low-lying wooden or stone span with its reflection captured in still water below, surrounded by the reed-fringed banks characteristic of this stretch of river. Kiyochika's printing technique—thin pigment layers built through multiple impressions on absorbent washi—produces the soft, photographic tonal gradation that distinguishes his riverscape series from the harder-edged prints of his contemporaries.
