Description
This print depicts clearing rain at Kawaguchi Zenkōji Temple, capturing the atmospheric aftermath of a downpour—a meteorological subject Kiyochika treated with particular sensitivity. The light that follows rainfall, with its reflective wet surfaces, dispersed clouds, and steaming ground, suited his technique of gradated bokashi and pale pigment washes better than any other weather condition. The Zenkōji temple at Kawaguchi, a modest provincial counterpart to the famous Nagano temple of the same name, provides the architectural anchor: wet tile roofs, water-heavy pines, and possibly a stone lantern or torii caught in raking light as clouds break. Puddles in the foreground likely mirror the sky above. The print exemplifies how Kiyochika transformed conventional meisho-e (famous-place pictures) subject matter through his radical attention to transient atmospheric effects rather than iconic scenery.
