Description

Zojoji Temple in Shiba at Midday (芝増上寺日中) depicts one of Tokyo's most prominent Buddhist temples, the Jodo-sect complex at Shiba that served as funerary temple for the Tokugawa shoguns. Kiyochika's choice of midday (nicchu) lighting is distinctive within his body of work, which favors nocturnal and twilight subjects. Bright midday light would cast sharp shadows from the temple's massive sanmon gate and surrounding pines, and the composition likely contrasts the old religious architecture with the emerging modern cityscape visible beyond the compound. The scene sits within the meisho-e tradition of depicting famous Tokyo sites while demonstrating Kiyochika's ability to render the particular quality of strong overhead sunlight—harder and more defined than the atmospheric effects of his night prints.
