Description
This print depicts the Daimaru dry goods store (gofukuya) in Ōdenmacho, a commercial district in what is now central Tokyo's Nihonbashi area. The Daimaru was among Edo's most prominent textile merchants, occupying a substantial urban building that would have been a recognizable landmark to contemporary viewers. Kiyochika situates the commercial premises within his broader project of documenting Meiji-era Tokyo's evolving streetscape, combining the architectural specificity of a named establishment with his characteristic treatment of ambient light. The composition likely shows the storefront facade with street activity—pedestrians in a mixture of Western and Japanese dress, rickshaws, and the commercial bustle typical of the Nihonbashi merchant district. Kiyochika's tonal approach to such urban subjects reflects his interest in recording the visual texture of a city absorbing Western commercial forms while retaining Edo-period spatial patterns.
