Description

This print depicts Shin-Ōhashi Bridge (the New Great Bridge over the Sumida River) in rain, a subject that stands among Kiyochika's most technically demanding works. Rain in woodblock prints required carvers to cut fine parallel lines into the keyblock and printers to apply thin ink in precisely aligned impressions; Kiyochika combined this convention with his atmospheric bokashi to create rain that does not merely mark the scene but obscures it. Shin-Ōhashi, opened in 1693 and one of Edo's most recognizable crossings, appears here not as a monument but as a structural form dissolving in precipitation. Figures with umbrellas cross in silhouette. The river below merges tonally with the rain-darkened sky. The print echoes Hiroshige's celebrated rain subjects—particularly his Sudden Shower over Ōhashi—while replacing Hiroshige's graphic clarity with photographic tonal diffusion consistent with Kiyochika's Western training.
