Description
Titled (両国花火之図), 'Fireworks at Ryōgoku,' this print depicts the famous summer fireworks displays held on the Sumida River at Ryōgoku—a subject with deep roots in the Edo-period ukiyo-e tradition, most famously treated by Hiroshige. Kiyochika's version would have subjected this established meisho subject to his characteristic interest in the effects of explosive artificial light against a dark sky, with luminous bursts rendered through careful pigment layering on washi. The Ryōgoku fireworks drew enormous crowds, and the composition likely includes the dense gathering of spectators on riverboats and the embankments. The contrast between the brief brilliant illumination of the fireworks and the darkness of the river surface below provided ideal conditions for Kiyochika's kosen-ga approach to light in the nocturnal urban landscape.
