Description

Rain at Umewaka likely depicts the area around the Umewaka Shrine in the Mukojima district on the eastern bank of the Sumida River, associated with the Noh legend of the child Umewakamaru. Kiyochika frequently returned to this marshy riverside district, where willows, rain, and water created conditions suited to his atmospheric lighting practice. The title's combination of rain and a place name laden with poetic associations follows the meisho-e tradition of depicting famous sites while adding Kiyochika's characteristic meteorological drama. Rain streaking across lamplight or diffusing into dark water would create the luminous contrasts that define his most celebrated prints.
