Description
Titled (今戸の月), 'Moon at Imado,' this print depicts a district on the eastern bank of the Sumida River in the old shitamachi quarter of Tokyo. Imado was known for its tile kilns and its position along the river, and as an older residential district it retained in the Meiji period some of the character of the pre-modern city. Moon viewing (tsukimi) as a theme gave Kiyochika occasion to deploy his most refined nocturnal tonalities—the deep blues and blacks of night sky graduated through careful bokashi against the pale luminosity of a full or nearly full moon. The Sumida River would likely appear in the composition's lower register, with its reflective surface carrying the moonlight downward, and the modest architecture of the Imado district visible in silhouette or half-light.
