Description
Published under the series title Tōkyō Meisho Shinkei (True Views of Famous Places in Tokyo), this print belongs to a group of urban landscape compositions in which Kiyochika documented the changing cityscape of Meiji-era Tokyo. The meisho-e tradition of depicting famous sites had deep roots in Edo-period printmaking, but Kiyochika reoriented it around the visual transformation of the city — gaslit streets, new Western-style buildings, and industrial waterways alongside surviving Edo-period landmarks. The specific site depicted would combine recognizable topographic features with Kiyochika's characteristic treatment of artificial and natural light. The series title signals both continuity with the meisho tradition and the documentary ambition to capture Tokyo at a moment of irreversible change.
