Description
Rain at Sanmai Bridge in Hakone depicts one of the picturesque crossings on the old Tokaido highway route through the mountainous Hakone district southwest of Tokyo. The region's landscape of volcanic lakes, mountain passes, and forests made it a subject for Hiroshige and other meisho-e artists, and Kiyochika extends that tradition with his characteristic emphasis on weather. Rain in a mountain setting would produce mist rising from cedar forests and wet stone surfaces glistening in diffuse gray light. The bridge structure—likely a modest wooden crossing—provides architectural scale against the surrounding landscape. Kiyochika's use of rain as a compositional and atmospheric device here moves the subject away from clear-day topography toward mood and sensation.
