Description
This print depicts Honmachi-dōri, a major commercial street in Tokyo, under a nighttime snowfall — one of Kiyochika's characteristic kōsen-ga compositions. Snow scenes allowed him to exploit the interaction of lamplight or lantern glow with reflective white ground surfaces, producing the luminous atmospheric effects that defined his mature style. The street would have been lined with merchant establishments whose signboards and window lights create punctuating sources of warm illumination against the cold blue-grey of the snowing sky. [Bokashi](/glossary/bokashi) gradation in the sky transitions from deep indigo at the periphery toward lighter tones near light sources. The near-empty street and falling snow give the composition a quality of stillness unusual in urban woodblock prints of the period.
