Description
Fuji from Satta Pass (薩多の富士) depicts Mount Fuji as seen from the Satta Pass on the old Tokaido highway between Yui and Okitsu in Shizuoka Prefecture, a viewpoint where the mountain appears above the Pacific Ocean and rocky coastal cliffs. The site was made famous by Hiroshige in his Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido and became one of the most reproduced viewpoints in the Japanese print tradition. Kiyochika's version likely recasts this established composition in his characteristic atmospheric mode, potentially depicting the mountain at dawn or dusk when ocean mist and shifting light transform the familiar scene. The steep coastal road, the sea far below, and Fuji rising above the horizon create a vertically compressed composition that challenges conventional landscape space.
