Description
A depiction of a rooster or chicken, this print falls within Kiyochika's kacho-e production and likely dates from his later career when he turned more frequently to natural subjects. The rooster's plumage — iridescent greens, reds, and golds in the tail and hackle — offered a compositional challenge suited to the woodblock medium's capacity for flat, saturated color areas set against gradated grounds. Kiyochika's approach to such subjects tends toward compact, grounded compositions rather than the airy asymmetry of classical Edo kacho-e. The bird is likely shown on bare ground or amid sparse vegetation, rendered with the economical line work and tonal restraint that distinguish his bird studies from the more decorative treatments of his contemporaries.
