Description
A study of clouds, this print demonstrates Kiyochika's sustained interest in atmospheric phenomena as subject matter in their own right. Clouds provided a vehicle for exploring tonal gradation through bokashi, the technique of blotting inked blocks while still wet to produce soft transitions impossible in conventional flat-printed nishiki-e. The composition isolates sky and cloud mass with minimal or absent ground reference, placing full emphasis on the volumetric modeling of cumulus or cirrus forms. Kiyochika's handling of light through clouds reflects direct influence from Western painting and photography, which he encountered during the early Meiji period. The palette is likely restricted to greys, blue-greys, and whites on washi.
