Description
Under the Cherry Blossoms depicts figures gathered beneath flowering cherry trees, a subject rooted in the hanami tradition of spring blossom-viewing that was deeply embedded in Edo and Meiji urban culture. Kiyochika's treatment likely emphasizes the quality of light diffused through masses of pale blossoms—a subject that allowed him to explore the same atmospheric luminosity he applied to his lamp-lit street scenes, here rendered in soft daylight. The composition may include figures in a mixture of Western and Japanese dress reflecting the hybrid visual culture of Meiji Tokyo. Petals drifting downward would have been rendered through precise registration of light gradations against darker foliage or sky.
